Having lived through a northern hemisphere winter, you could probably hardly say Brisbane has “winter”. STILL.. I can’t help but like the public space activation happening with the Winter Festival and ice skate rink in King George Square. I had loved the more dramatic (visual) changes in seasons when living overseas and so I’m all for celebrating seasonality. At first it seemed a bit naff, but that is also what makes it kind of awesome. It is a unique experience Brisbane has never had, and it is enriching public space (though they might want to work out some better site layout and viewing areas next time, as it feels very cramped).
Well it’s no Nathan Phillips Square (Toronto) or Rockefeller Centre (New York) …..but same, same, but different.
