Community planning and visioning often overlaps with creative strategy and branding, and it is interesting to see business/design companies move into that urban and development space. I like the different approaches they can bring.
I had first seen IDEO do it years ago, Bruce Mau Design recently, and now Frost (Sydney). They are looking at Redfern and Broken Hill. I’m imagining the research involved in rebranding a community or a new one, is much like a planning process – understanding identity, place, people, character and aspirations.

Urban design and planning ought to be learning from this. Not sure what happened with it, but in the early days of BCC Laneways Strategy I had seem good recognition and merging of planning policy and marketing as core teams in encouraging and managing that change.
